Ro-Anne Royer, the residence-hall director of Schmidt/WilsonHalls, was awarded the Outstanding New Professional of the YearAward for the state of Indiana on Sunday.
The award is sponsored by Great Lakes Association for Collegeand University Housing Officers, an organization that specializesin residence housing and student affairs. Royer was honored at theassociation's annual conference in Michigan.
Royer was born on the island of Dominica and completed herundergraduate and graduate studies in Mississippi. Ball State isthe first full-time institution where she worked.
Since many hall directors keep their positions for decades,Royer's four years at the university still qualify her as newcomerin the eyes of GLACUHO.
"She is phenomenal," Schmidt/Wilson Assistant Residence HallDirector Chris Haug said. "She has a dedication, a passion and anintrinsic motivation for the well being of every student living inour halls. I am so honored to be able to work with and learn fromher."
Wilson Resident Assistant Kelly Hedinger credits Royer's caringpersonality for her win.
"I love the fact that when I talk to her, she focuses on me,"Hedinger said. "She really cares about what I'm saying and how itmakes me feel."
