FOOTBALL: Sherrel runs past Cards for record

Junior running back carries 43 times for second straight week

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Even though it knew some healthy doses ofthe Anthony Sherrell would be forthcoming, Ball State seemedincapable of slowing down the 5-9, 194-pound junior.

In the previous week's win over Central Michigan, Sherrellcarried a school-record 43 times for more than 150 yards. He had 43attempts again Saturday, but gained 230 yards to set another schoolstandard, 1,348, in a season. For the Cardinals defense, it wasdisheartening to say the least.

"It was frustrating to say the least," cornerback Jesse Avantsaid. "He's probably the second-best back in the MAC behind Turner. We wanted to slow him down, and we didn't."

In outside linebacker Lorenzo Scott's mind, if Sherrell wasfinding a hole in the middle or breaking around the outside, it wasa case of someone not doing his assignment.

"If he bounces outside, someone didn't have containment; if hegoes up the middle, someone didn't fill a hole," Scott said. "Ifthat guy doesn't do his job and people don't pursue just right, than that's how you come up with a big play. They didn't come at uswith too much we didn't expect."

Stopping the run has been a season-long goal for Ball State, whohas yielded an average of 188.7 yards in that category.

DANTE RIDGEWAY

Despite dropping a few catchable balls, Dante Ridgeway managedeight receptions for 99 yards. His 1-yard touchdown catch gave him10 scores on the season, which ties Brian Oliver's 1993 effort forthe BSU record. The sophomore's career total of 14 TDs puts himthird.

Ridgeway also ran his single-season reception record, a mark hetopped last week at Western Michigan, to 82. His 1,024 yards issecond behind Dave Naumcheff's 1,065 in 1983.
