FOOTBALL: Ball State finds ways to run against Huskies

Hill leads Cardinal rushers; WR Bostic reels in career highs

DEKALB, Ill. — Although Talmadge Hill struggled throwingthe ball, he had some success running. The senior quarterbackrecorded 99 yards on eight carries to lead Ball State rushers, asthe Cardinals racked up 199 total. It was the second straight gameBall State, which was averaging just 103 yards two weeks ago, hadrushed for at least 198. That type of success did not surprisecoach Brady Hoke, but he added that his team still could not getmuch going.

"I thought we could run the ball," he said. "I thought they didnice job at times. If you're looking at that phase, yeah I'mpleased.

"(But) we had no momentum. We'd have some momentum, and thenwe'd throw an interception or have a dumb penalty."

Tailbacks Brad Seiss, Charles Wynn and Scott Blair all madecontributions, getting 43, 35 and 28 yards, respectively.

Personal bests

Seiss' touchdown in the first quarter was also the first of theredshirt freshman's career, and his 43 yards was a career-high.Sophomore Larry Bostic caught eight passes for 106 yards, bothcareer-highs. Freshman Bryan Williamson also had an individual bestof five receptions, which totaled 54 yards. Another receiver, RyanHahaj, pulled in his first four catches in four games.

Question mark at QB

With his second-half performance after replacing Hill, AndyRoesch may have opened up the quarterback position again. Roeschstarted the first two games of the season, but injured his shoulderand watched Hill work the next four games. Hill replaced Roeschagainst Miami and then spearheaded the win over Toledo.

Roesch completed 15 of 22 passes for 168 yards and twotouchdowns, but he also threw an interception.

"That's always the weekly question," Hoke said of thecompetition between Hill and Roesch, "and like every week I'll letyou wait (to find out)."

Turner the Burner

With a 31-yard run late in the first quarter, NIU's MichaelTurner passed Miami's Deland McCullough (1992-95) for third placeon the all-time Mid-American Conference rushing list. Turner nowhas 4,435 yards on his career.

"He's an outstanding back," Hoke said of the tailback. "He's gotgreat balance and good explosion."

Turner's 41 career touchdowns are fourth on the all-time MACcharts. Toledo's Chester Taylor (1998-2001) is second on theyardage list with 4,659. Travis Prentice from Miami (1996-99) holdsboth records, with 5,596 yards and 63 TDs.
