Do not throw those cardboard boxes away yet. Box City 2003 has arrived.
The 12-hour event is held at the University Green to promote homelessness awareness, Lee Roho, vice president in Tichenor/Trane Hall Council Vice President.
It begins at 6 p.m. on today and ends Saturday at 6 a.m.
"Everybody has a cardboard box to decorate and spend the night in, and prizes are awarded for the best-decorated box," sophomore Candice Sprinkle said.
Last year, Sprinkle's group won first place with its walk-in house, complete with a duct-tape roof, windows and a welcome mat.
Students can either bring their own boxes or purchase them for a dollar.
"We hold the event because it is not only a lot of fun, but is also an educational activity," Roho said. "A speaker from the Muncie Mission provides information about homelessness, and pamphlets containing statistics about the issue are also available."
Homelessness in the United States affects 14.4 million families, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless.
The money raised through the Box City is donated to the Muncie Mission to help combat homelessness.
Box City organizers will sell T-shirts for $10, and the proceeds will be given to the Muncie Mission, Roho said.
"Food, games and entertainment is provided throughout the night," Roho said.
The bands Shinky, General Admission and Noah East are also scheduled to perform at this year's event.
"Box City is a lot of fun," Sprinkle said. "I encourage everyone to come out and take part in it."
