News directors to visit campus

Conference to give students real-life experiences

The eighth annual Fall Broadcast News Conference will be held onBall State's campus Friday and Saturday.

The conference will feature news directors in television andradio from all over the region, Scott Adkins, Radio and TelevisionNews Directors Association secretary, said.

The two-day conference will feature news directors fromIndianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Evansville, Terre Haute,Lafayette and Muncie.

All events will take place in the Ball CommunicationsBuilding.

Students will have the chance to talk with professionals andparticipate in workshops that will benefit students by giving themreal-life experiences, Adkins said.

John Larson, west coast correspondent for Dateline NBC, will bespeaking Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Larson has won numerous awards for his work in journalismincluding the DuPont-Columbia and two national Emmys.

This will be Larson's second time speaking at theconference.

Deborah Potter will also be speaking. Potter, a formercorrespondent for CBS and CNN currently works as the executivedirector for NewsLab.

"It is great to have two big-name speakers at the conference,"professor of telecommunications Bob Papper said. "This is Muncie,IN. You have to bring them in."

On Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. news directors will be on handto listen and critique students' tapes.

This is a great opportunity to network, Papper said.

"These are award-winning, nationally recognized journalists whoare actually coming to talk to students," Terry Heifetz, managingeditor of convergent news, said.

Heifetz, who works at Ball State's NewsLink, will beparticipating in the conference.

Heifetz is in his first year working at Ball State and said heis looking forward to meeting the journalists coming to theconference.

"I've been in the business for 15 years, but I never stoplearning," Heifetz said.

Adkins said students from other universities attend theconference, some traveling hundreds of miles.

"This is a good chance for Ball State to show off what it has tooffer, such as the the new Newslink studio," Adkins said.

Friday's sessions are free and Saturday's sessions, includingbreakfast and lunch, will cost $15.
