The Delta Zeta sorority will hold the third-annual Melissa'sWalk Sunday to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital.
Delta Zeta started the walk after sorority member MelissaSteckler died on July 31, 2001 because of extensive burns from agrilling accident.
The three-mile walk begins at the Student Center at 2 p.m. andwill take participants through campus and the village.
Registration tables will be set up from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.through Friday at the Scramble Light and in the Atrium.
Registration will also be available in the Student Center Tallyroom at 1:30 p.m. the day of the walk.
Cost to participate in the walk is $5 per person and donationswill also be accepted in Steckler's memory.
Optional T-shirts will be sold for $10.
All proceeds will be donated to the burn unit at RileyChildren's Hospital where Steckler died after more than two monthsof fighting, Delta Zeta philanthropic chair Amber Mann said.
The past two walks have attracted almost 300 participants. Thisyear Mann is hoping to bring in close to $6,000.
After the walk participants gather in the yard of the Delta TauDelta fraternity house around a tree that was planted in Steckler'shonor three years ago.
The Delta Zeta's have also started a scholarship in Melissa'shonor. The "Melissa Steckler Sparkling Flame" is awarded to a DeltaZeta member who shares the same qualities Steckler had and wholooks at life in a positive light, Mann said.
Steckler's family will attend the walk, just as they have in thepast.
The day of the walk people speak about Steckler and watch avideo of her, Delta Zeta member Liz Calhoun said. A pamphlet aboutSteckler will also be given to participants.
"It's pretty emotional hearing the stories of Melissa," saidMann, who did not have the chance to know her.
Although Steckler was only a member of Delta Zeta for a year,members still feel close to her.
"Knowing it was one of your sisters makes you feel connected,"Calhoun said.
