Travis Lasley, senior, and Nick Phillips, former student, sat inthe bar alongside 14 of their friends from Yorktown and watched theChicago Cubs fail to win the National League Division Seriesagainst the Florida Marlins, 9-6.
"We beat the Braves," Lasley said. "We didn't even think we weregoing to get in the playoffs, and all of a sudden, we're one gameaway from a World Series. Either way, I'm very proud of them."
Around 80 people came to the Locker Room to watch game seven ofthe Cubs-Marlins series, while others sat at home, alone, andfollowed the game each inning hoping the Cubs would score in thefinal innings..
"[I'm] very pissed off and disappointed," senior and longtimeCubs fan Ryan Weiss said after the loss. "I don't know what to say;I don't even know what to say."
Many were convinced the Cubs would win in game seven.
"It's a long time overdue," senior political science majorJustin Hinga said. "Should've happened in '84, but we'll takeit."
That was until the Marlins, who have not lost a postseasonseries, scored eight runs in the eighth inning to beat the Cubs 8-3Tuesday.
At the top of the eighth inning, Cubs fans still hoped for apossible game seven win in Chicago.
"I would not be suprised if the Cubs pulled this out," Lasleysaid in the eighth inning. "They've got too much talent on thisteam. They can easily pull this out."
As the Cubs' last at bat approached, the bar grew increasinglyquiet. The third out came and the Cubs' World Series dreams came toan end.
"Overall, I'm numb from the fact that the Cubs lost," Phillipssaid. "I'm disheartened...I just can't explain enough how I wantedthem to get into the series and they didn't make it."
Some left asking if the curse of the billy goat is real, anddealt with Wednesday night's loss.
"The curse has to be for real," senior Rich Lentz said. "You goin three games to one, and all of a sudden; some random fan, yougot a shortstop that hardly ever makes mistakes, you got a CyYoung-candidate pitcher who all of a sudden throws it. All thosemistakes, logic states it's got to equal one thing: The one thingis the goat man.
"If I ran Wrigley Field next year, I'd have a little press boxsection and I'd have a goat for the rest of the season."
Some students continued the night despite the loss and had agood time at the bars.
"I feel really bad for the Cubbies," senior Jessyca Young said."I really wanted them to win, but that's okay because I'm going todrink it up."
