Women's Golf: Freshman lead Cardinals to second place

wo freshmen led the way for the Ball State women's golf team as they placed second in their host match: The Cardinal Classic at the Player's Club in Yorktown.

Amber Uphaus and Chelsie Flannery both tied for ninth overall as each shot 153 through 36 holes.

"I think it (the Cardinal Classic) just goes to show the strength of the young players we have," head coach Shelley Sanders said.

"I'm pleased with their performances and they should be encouraged by how they finished and should look to continue to improve."

Taking first place was Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan, which shot a school-record final-round score and beat the Cardinals by seven strokes.

Western Michigan's Stephanie Donkin was the individual medalist with a 144 in the two-day event.

Finishing behind Uphaus and Flannery for Ball State was sophomore Ali Meyer, who tied for 13th overall while senior Lisa Robertson and sophomore Carmen Bodine tied for 30th and 37th, respectively.

"I think it shows that there is a lot of potential and it should give them a boost of confidence. It sets a standard for the rest of the year," Sanders said.

The Cardinals' next match comes Sept. 21 at the Youngstown State Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio.
