When Ball State's (0-1) head coach Ron Rainey put Butler (1-0) on the schedule in 2002 he said he hoped to develop a rivalry between the two Indiana schools.
For the second straight year the Bulldogs left the match with a one-goal victory.
The game started with a moment of silence to honor fullback Carrie Colglazier, who was killed in an automobile accident in June. Colglazier appeared in 13 games for the Bulldogs during her freshman season.
Butler's goal came in the 85th minute on a shot by Meredith Buemi. Krista Rott and Marcie Stucky assisted the goal.
Head coach Ron Rainey said he was surprised no goals were scored before Buemi's.
"Both teams were not match fit," he said.
One other surprise Rainey said was Butler's style of play in the match. Entering the game, he said Butler would try to dominate the game by possessing the ball and using combinations to penetrate the Cardinal defense. Rainey said Friday's game saw the Bulldogs trying to loft the ball over the defense.
The Cardinals were outshot 16-5, but Rainey said the difference in the match was his team's inability to convert opportunities into goals. Junior forwards Dee Nocero and Kate Nadalin, the two most prominent attackers for the Cardinals, combined for one shot, but Rainey said the two created a couple of good chances for the team.
Rainey said his team must get better in some of the technical aspects of the game to make them a more dangerous threat on the offensive side.
"We need to get more repetitions, improve our mental concentration and increase our vision with the ball better," Rainey said.
Rainey said these improvements would happen with more work before and after practice by the players.
Senior midfielder Alicia Kalafut led the Cardinals' attack with two shots. Senior goalie Megan Swafford recorded four saves.
