The Ball State men's cross country team finished fifth at theIndiana Intercollegiate this weekend. Indiana University won thechampionship with only 15 points after their runners filled thefirst through fifth team spots.
Once again three Ball State freshmen were among the top-fiverunners for the team. Stephen Cohen held the number one spot forthe team with his 21st-place finish and time of 26:06. Justin Stadtfinished 31st with a time of 26:21 to put him in the third teamspot, followed by Jeff Kent in the fourth team spot with his timeof 26:26 and 33rd-place finish.
After a week off, senior Aaron Hoover finished 30th with a timeof 26:19 taking up the second team spot. Steve Samuel, anothersenior, made his way into the fifth team spot, with his 61st-placefinish and time of 26:57.
Senior leadership for the team is important and Hoover andSamuel, along with Sal Impelliterri, are going to be looked to fortheir leadership as the season progresses.
"It's absolutely key," student assistant Michael Johnson said."Any great team has senior leadership."
Other finishers for the team were Zach Scherer with a time of27:01, Kevin Lister with a time of 27:05, Jeremy Smith with a timeof 27:32 and Impelliterri with a time of 28:03.
The team also took seven runners that competed in the open race.Four of those runners finished within the top 15.
"I couldn't have been happier with that," Johnson said about theperformance of the open runners. Johnson said that Sean Dillon,Kyle Hinkelman and Justin Gauthier are about ready to break throughto the next level.
The team will have two weeks off before they compete at theNotre Dame Invitational. The time off will give the team time toget some solid training in and keep improving.
