Dear Editor
As a master's student in psychology, there is a reoccurring theme I have noticed on this campus in the seven years I have been here. Ball State University will try to cheat its students in every office here.
As if the constantly increasing tuition is not enough, unexpected fees are continually arising. When these fees are refuted, there is always some excuse by Ball State as to why they never make a mistake.
For instance, my most recent example of this involves the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office. Half of the people in my dorm did not get their checks on time because of a rumored computer virus. Many students were forced to reapply and wait extra time on their checks.
This wouldn't be that big of a deal if the Bursar's Office didn't put a $25 late fee and a $10 installment plan fee that would have never existed had the office not have lost our information.
After a worker at the office admitted to the computer virus, I was denied a waiver for the Bursar's Office to remove the fee. I was subsequently treated disrespectfully for my request by employees who deny ever having made a mistake.
Parking Services is another one that is huge on mistreating students. I have too many stories to tell after spending seven years here, and every student I know has plenty of stories of his own. I'm not talking about a mistaken parking ticket or neglecting to turn in a certain paper. Just when I think I know all of the rules and all the things to do, something unfair happens unknowingly. There I go, unjustly coughing up my money again.
The people employed in these offices appear to be on a power trip and desire to lay their power onto you. If I wanted that, I'd go home to my mother.
A student has no say when it comes to interactions with any university office. If I've learned anything in my seven years here, at least I know that life is definitely not fair.
