The field hockey team continued its success against Louisvillethis weekend, as it opened its Mid-American Conference season witha pair of victories.
The Cardinals (5-5, 2-0 MAC) shut out No. 14 Louisville 2-0Saturday, beating it for the third straight time. Ball State beatLouisville (5-4, 1-1), also the Cardinals, twice last year when itwas ranked ninth.
Ball State also defeated Miami (1-6, 0-1) Friday 4-1. The twoweekend victories ended the Cardinals' four-game losing streak andpulled them back up to .500.
Senior Becky Weaver scored the only goal the team would needagainst Louisville 20 minutes into the contest. Her unassisted goaloff a rebound was her fourth of the season. Four minutes into thesecond half, freshman Lindsay Quay scored the second goal of thecontest.
Ball State scored the upset despite the Cardinals holding theadvantage in shots, 9-5, and penalty corners, 15-1. Sophomore TracyBannister had three saves in her third shutout of the season.
Junior Holly Frantz started the scoring against Miami with agoal off a penalty corner seven minutes into the contest. TheRedHawks tied the score at one with a goal three minutes later.
Later in the first half, Weaver scored the go-ahead goal,assisted by seniors Afton Hess and Kirsty Houghton. Hess addedanother goal and assist, and junior Jen Strodel scored in thevictory.
Overall, the Cardinals dominated the RedHawks on shots andpenalty corners. Ball State had a season high 29 shots to Miami'stwo. The Cardinals also held the edge in corners, 14-1.
Hess had 15 shots against Miami, including 10 on goal. Her goalagainst the RedHawks gave her seven on the season, tying her forthe MAC lead.
Hess also leads the MAC in assists, with teammates Weaver andHoughton in second and third, respectively.
