Man charged in igniting police car

A 37-year-old was arreseted on charges of resisting law enforcement, reckless driving, arson and trespassing, after an unmarked parked police car was lighted on fire early Thursday morning outside the University Police Department.

"I saw the flickering of the flames off the window," police officer Tim Harshman said. "I went outside because I was afraid it might explode."

Harshman said he did not see anyone near the vehicle.

The dollar amount of damage to the vehicle is unknown at this point.

"It sustained significant fire damage," said Robert Fey, assistant chief of police and associate director of public safety.

Moments after the Muncie Fire Dispatch put out the fire, a Ball Memorial Hospital officer saw a suspicious vehicle about one block south of the University Police Department, near Washington Street, Fey said.

The officer attempted to make contact with the driver who was riding alone, when he took off in his car, not cooperating with the officer.

The driver, Thomas L. Grimm, 5600 W. Kilgore, drove onto I-69 North, sending Indiana State Police and other county agencies after him, Fey said.

Grimm was arrested near Fort Wayne with charges of . He is not affiliated with Ball State.

Grimm is currently being held in Delaware County Jail.
