Former Ball State softball player Katie Shea is one of 174 student athletes from Division I, II and III schools to receive a $6,900 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. To be eligible for the award, a student athlete must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.2, display both academic and athletic excellence, complete his or her eligibility and intend to go on to graduate studies.
A four-year letter winner at Ball State, Shea earned all-league accolades every year, garnering first-team honors in 2002 and 2003 and second-team awards in 2000 and 2001. She is one of two Cardinals to garner Mid-American Conference Player of the Year honors, which she did in 2002. She also was part of the Verizon Academic All-America First Team her junior and senior seasons. Shea ended her career at Ball State as the school's all-time leader in batting average (.357), hits (203), doubles (39) and total bases (265).
Shea graduated magna cum laude from Ball State's Honors College in May with a 3.82 GPA as an exercise science major. In the fall, she will begin a three-year doctorate program in physical therapy at Oakland University.
