After a delayed opening, Tuhey Pool is open and better then ever.
Tuhey Pool, located at the corner of Wheeling Avenue and White River Boulevard, was once owned and operated by the Muncie Parks Department. It is now under the management of the Muncie Family YMCA.
According to the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County Inc. newsletter, the Ball Corporation Community Betterment Fund donated $6,272 to the YMCA for program and safety equipment for Tuhey Pool.
This has allowed for numerous repairs.
The pool has received a new water heater and sanitation system. Pepsi donated a concession stand that offers a variety of snacks, candy and ice cream.
Tuhey pool was scheduled to open Memorial Day, but because of bad weather and a broken pipe in the filtration system, the opening was delayed until June 7.
"We haven't had much luck with the weather so far this summer," Sheri Stacy, Muncie family YMCA aquatics director, said.
A luau that was scheduled for the grand opening will be rescheduled and will include live music from WLBC, a limbo contest, sand volleyball, raffles, water relays and water basketball.
"We [at the YMCA] hope to make the pool a more family-oriented place," Megan Reed, head lifeguard, said. "We are bringing the Y values here."
The YMCA values include caring, respect, honesty and responsibility.
Tuhey pool has eight lifeguards on staff during open swim hours; however, children five and under must be accompanied by an adult.
A pool ranger has also been hired by the YMCA. The job of the pool ranger is to get to know the kids and enforce discipline when needed.
This will help kids learn the Y values and still be able to come and have a good time, Stacy said.
The YMCA has also increased the hours of operation at the pool.
Open swim is held 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Weekday mornings and evenings, the YMCA holds a variety of classes for all ages.
YMCA Water Fit and Arthritis Aquatics classes are offered to all ages and use the water to improve strength. Swim lessons are also available for any age.
The pool offers visitors a water slide and a pool basketball net. A sand volleyball court offers entertainment for sun lovers as well.
"We are hoping for 300 plus guest a day," Stacy said.
Special events will be held throughout the summer including a Fourth of July celebration that will include music, games and inflatable pool toys.
