Tuhey Pool holds Mayor's Meet

Competition divided into five swimming age groups

Hundreds of swimmers gathered at Tuhey Pool this weekend to test their skills in the water.

The Yorktown Swim Club sponsored The Muncie Mayor's Meet Invitational 2003 attracting 444 swimmers of all ages.

Swimmers competed in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and the butterfly.

In each age category winners were selected by the highest points earned throughout the three days of competition.

"This has been a beautiful weekend," YSC head coach J. Agnew said. "We've had good weather, good swimming and good sportsmanship."

Age categories are divided into five groups: eight and under, 9 to 10, 11 to 12, 13 to 14, and 15 and older.

The oldest competitor is Trischa Zorn, 39, with the Lawrence Swim Team. Numerous swimmers are as young as 6 years old.

Officials and judges were volunteers consisting mostly of parents.

Participants were judged on their times. For groups of ages 9 and older, 13 heats were held with varying strokes and lengths, the longest being 1500 meters (one mile). Swimmers had the choice of which heats to participate in, if not all, with the top 10 scores totaled for their score.

Also awarded to one swimmer was the Schulhof Award. The name of the winner was not available at the time of print.

The Schulhof Award has been given to the hardest working swimmer since 1965. This year the Schulhof Award was given to the Delaware County swimmer who showed hard work and set a good example for swimmers.

The Schulhof Award was named after Larry Schulhof who was a former Muncie Burris Swimmer. Schulhof set state records and was inducted into the Indiana Swimming Hall of Fame in 1987.

Swimmers up for this award are nominated by their coaches.

Tuhey Pool has hosted the invitational since the beginning, which dates back before 1965.

"This competition used to be the biggest in Indiana because we were the only ones with a 50-meter pool," Darrell Butler said.

As other pools have been built and improved, the pool has become one of numerous 50-meter pools.

However, Butler said, "The competition is still the largest competition in Delaware county."

With the recent turnover in ownership of Tuhey Pool, teams felt that the pool has made great strides improving the area.

"The pools in good shape and very clean," Butler, said.
