Muncie's Sky-Hi Drive In movie theater provides an alternative means of recreation for students and residents.
"Going to the drive-in is a unique thing we like to do in the summertime," Muncie resident Michelle Cruz said. "It is cheaper than a regular movie theater and more fun as well."
The Sky-Hi Drive In now offers a full menu at the snack bar after recently changing ownership.
"We have cleaned the place up a lot," manager Samantha Astalfi said.
The Sky-Hi Drive In has served Muncie residents for years.
"I can remember coming here as a kid," Astalfi said. "The drive-in has been open for a long time, and it has always been a great place to go."
This is the first week of the season that the drive-in will be open seven days a week.
The box office opens at 7 p.m. and movies begin around 8:20 p.m.
"People like to come to the drive-in theater because they don't have to sit still and be quiet," Astalfi said. "It is more fun and cheaper than regular movie theaters."
Moviegoers have a choice of two screens, each showing two movies.
"I really enjoy going to the drive-in during the summer," Ball State senior Katherine Cummings said. "You can sit outside and bring your own food."
The Sky-Hi Drive In is located at 1801 E. State Rd. 28 in Muncie.
"The Sky-Hi is a hidden getaway," Cummings said. "I didn't even know it existed until just recently. It is closer than one might think."
Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Though drive-ins have proved to be an alternate source of entertainment for Americans, some still prefer going to a movie theater.
"I enjoy others' reactions to the movie we are all seeing," Muncie resident Roger Hagen said. "Being part of an audience adds to the atmosphere. But drive-ins are something special to do on occasion."
Just like an old 1950s movie, viewers may see young lovers retreating to the drive-ins today.
"I would much rather go to a drive-in with a date because there is more interaction time which makes it easier for us to get to know each other," Muncie resident Cindy Hawthorn said.
