The Baltimore Orioles organization have signed Ball State junior Lorenzo Scott to a contract to play professional baseball. Although currently playing in the minor leagues for the Gulf Coast Orioles, Scott will return to the Ball State football team in the fall for what will be his final year of eligibility.
According to an NCAA bylaw, Scott can play for the Cardinals football team even though he has signed a professional baseball contract, as long as he declines his scholarship for the upcoming season.
Scott, a three-year letter winner in baseball, was drafted in the 17th round by the Orioles as the 494th overall pick after playing in 32 games, with five starts, for the Cards in 2003. In those games, Scott hit .231 (9-for-39), drove in 10 runs and scored nine more. Four of his nine hits were for extra bases, including two home runs.
During his baseball career at Ball State, the outfielder has a .256 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He has amassed 43 RBIs and 40 runs scored. Scott has been successful in 17 of his 23 career steal attempts.
In football, Scott has led Ball State in tackles for each of the last three seasons from his linebacker position. Last season, he started all 12 games to extend his starting streak to 30 and ranked 10th in the Mid-American Conference in tackles with 124. His 10 tackles for loss led the team.
