Panning moves on in championships

Ball State junior Paul Panning is one of 15 competitors taking part in the final round of the pole vault competition at 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The event, held in Sacramento, Calif., began with 26 competitors but only 15 made it through qualifying rounds to earn a spot in the finals. Panning and the other finalists cleared 16-feet-10 3/4 to secure their places in the finals. The height marked Panning's sixth best effort of the season.

Panning won the Mid-American Conference title with a height of 17-2 1/2. He also set a Ball State record when with his first-place effort of 17-4 1/2 at the Pacesetter Invitational. The jump was one of three first-place finishes in a row Panning had this year after he missed the first meet. His other first place finishes were at the Big Blue Classic and Miami Invitational. A fourth first-place finish at The Butler Twilight, fifth-place effort at Drake and third-place finish at the Billy Hayes Invitational make up his impressive season.

The pole vault finals will take place Friday.
