Orioles draft Ball State junior

Three Cardinals picked on second day of MLB draft

Along with Brad Snyder, Lorenzo Scott was drafted in the 17th round (494 overall) by the Baltimore Orioles. He is the eighth Cardinal selected by the franchise.

Scott, who is a two-sport player for Ball State, said he will talk to the Baltimore organization and if the situation is favorable, he would decide whether to continue with the organization.

Scott became the fifth Cardinal since 1999 to be picked by the Orioles, the tenth overall to play for the franchise. Last season, Paul Henry was selected by Baltimore in the seventh round. Larry Bigbie was the highest Ball State pick by Baltimore as the 21st pick in the first round.

Scott, a junior, rarely saw action during the 2003 season, logging 39 at-bats as a reserve outfielder as well as a pinch hitter and pinch runner. In his first collegiate at-bat, he hit a home run on the first pitch, the first of seven in his career. He has a total of 43 career RBI as well as 17 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

Scott, a weakside linebacker, has earned three letters in football, He has played in 34 games for Ball State, starting in 30. He also led the team in tackles in all of his three seasons so far. He has 124 tackles in each of the last two seasons, adding to a career total of 344.

Besides Scott and Snyder, both who were selected the first day of the draft, Ball State had three more players drafted the second day: senior Brian Lynch, senior Ben Schroeder and junior Mike Johnston.

Lynch, the MAC leader in wins for the 2003 season, was drafted in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies. He also threw complete games in his last seven starts.

Schroeder, Ball State catcher, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 26th round. After two seasons, he ended his career as the all-time leader in runs-per-game with 1.04.

Johnston, a pitcher, was welcomed into the San Fransisco Giants in the 41st round.

This year's Ball State group tied the school's record for most players drafted by the league in one year. The other two occasions were 2000 and 1999, highlighted by Bigbie's selection.
