Since Scott Olson left his position as dean of the College of Communication, Information and Media, Michael Holmes has been chosen to hold the position while the university prepares for the nationwide search.
"I think this will be one of the most sought-after positions in the country," provost and vice president of academic affairs Beverley Pitts said. "We will be working from an outstanding pool because the university's program is so well known."
Holmes will begin his position as interim dean July 1 while a national search to fill the position is underway.
"I am pleased to have this opportunity," Holmes said. "My goal during the interim period is to not only maintain but improve the state of the university."
Holmes has served as chair and professor for the department of communication since 2001.
"Dr. Holmes is an experienced administrator and has been very involved with projects such as the university's iCommunication grant," Pitts said. "He is seen as an excellent leader."
Former dean Scott Olson accepted a position as vice president of academic affairs at Minnesota State University. Olson was successful at securing the university's $20 million iCommunication grant from Lilly Endowment and establishing CCIM as one of the nation's 10 largest colleges of communication.
"Scott Olson was an outstanding dean. He brought so much to the university," Pitts said. "He will be dearly missed."
Holmes worked closely with Scott, including helping to secure the iCommunication grant.
"Scott has been a wonderful and dear asset to this university. He leaves large shoes to fill," Holmes said.
When asked if he had any desire to fulfill the permanent role of dean, Holmes said he was not ready to answer that question.
Holmes received his bachelor's degree from Southwest State University in Minnesota, his master's degree from Southern Illinois University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has written numerous papers and publications. His research interests include organizational communication and communication technology, information visualization in workgroup settings and communication and aging in organizations.
The search process for a permanent dean will begin in the fall and Pitts hopes to have the position filled by March.
