Former Cardinal pitcher to start in Indy

Tonight at Victory Field in Indianapolis, former Ball State pitcher Sam McConnell is slated to start for Richmond when the Triple A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves faces the Indians.

McConnell was drafted in 1997 by Pittsburgh in the 11th round of the professional baseball amateur draft after spending three seasons at Ball State.

The right-hander started the season in Greenville, S.C., with the Braves' Double A affiliate there. Working as a reliever there, he was 1-0 with a 4.11 ERA. Over 15 1/3 innings, McConnell allowed 18 hits and seven earned runs. He displayed solid control by striking out eight while walking only four.

So far at Richmond this season, McConnell has appeared in nine games and started one. In those games, he has managed a 1-1 record to go along with a 3.54 ERA. McConnell has allowed 27 hits and eight earned runs in 20.1 innings pitched. He has also struck out 11 batters, while issuing free passes to eight. Opposing batters are currently hitting .325 against him.
