Ann Johnson creates world renowned clocks and gifts in Muncie shop

Stumped shoppers no longer need to wander around the mall trying to find the "perfect" gift. F.B. Fogg a unique gift shop downtown Muncie has imported gifts, and handmade crafts and clothing.-á

"This is a very small world," exclaimed Ann Johnson better known as F.B. Fogg to the art world. She is owner and an artist at F.B. Fogg.-á

Johnson opened her shop in 1960 as a gift shop with products she had brought back from countries she had traveled.-áWhile mainly in Third World countries she saw many "wonderful treasures" that she knew if she liked the so would someone else.-á

"There is no recession with things made from the hand and heart," smiled Johnson.-á

Much of the gifts in F.B. Fogg are handmade by Johnson and other local artist.-á When getting started, Johnson was a teacher, water color artist, and young mother. She needed paper to do her water color. However, the paper was too expensive.-áSomeone told her that she could make her own paper out of "linter" which she took at lint from the dryer.-á When she made the "slurry" or pulp for the paper it was not like ordinary paper. The "slurry" was easy to sculpt and she decided to work with her paper creation.-áAfter making statues for a period of time Johnson decided to make clocks out of the statues. Now her clocks are in over 600 galleries around the world.

"Many people are surprised to see that I am a woman because of my success," laughed Johnson.-á

Because of the success Johnson has had, the store changes very often because of shipping.-áBuyers from all over the world now ask for specific creations. Often times a picture or an idea is sent that people request.-á Orders are often put on display for a short period of time before sent off.-á Most orders take four to six weeks to arrive to their destination. Celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, and Madeline Albright have made purchases from Johnson.

"We call this[Muncie] our home," stated Johnson. She said that she likes to think of Indiana as a place where she has to come up with her own ideas and is not bombarded with other's ideas.

"I'm not influenced from the outside forces, and it [ideas] come from within," Johnson explained.''2#-¬v~f f.b. foggDNEditorial''2SORT+â-ä2AUDT
