Senior Patricia Soman earned her final award as a Ball State student-athlete, being named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Second Team. She became first in the history of Ball State's women's track and field team to be recognized as an All-American.
Earlier in the summer, she was named to the Academic All-District First Team, which allowed her to be considered for national status. She was previously named to the All-Mid-American Conference Academic First Team.
Soman ended her collegiate athletic career in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing ninth in the long jump. She also competed in the triple jump but did not continue beyond the preliminary trials.
Soman was named the Most Valuable Performer of the MAC Outdoor Championships after taking first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the long and triple jumps. She also participated in two fourth-place relay teams. The performance during the two-day competition was enough for Trackshark.com to name her its National Athlete of the Week for that week. She broke Ball State records for the long and triple jumps at the Drake Relays.
