BSU students, instructor nominated for 12 Emmys

Award winners to be announced June 7 in Cleveland

Ball State broke its record of six regional Emmy nominations with 12 this year. Five students were nominated along with one faculty member. This is the fourth consecutive year Ball State has been nominated.

The students and faculty member were nominated by the Cleveland chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Cleveland chapter includes television stations in Akron/Canton, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo for Ohio; Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Muncie for Indiana; and Erie, Pa.

Winners will be announced at the ceremony on June 7 in Cleveland, Ohio.

"The university will benefit greatly from the nominations," Andy Beckman said.

Beckman was nominated along with Jill Siebert for best student program for their work with "Connections Live."

"We wouldn't have done it without WIPB support cast and all the faculty members of the university," Beckman said.

Beckman recently gained publicity for his appearance with Regis Philbin on "LIVE with Regis and Kelly."

Beckman and Siebert were the only contestants nominated in the category so they are guaranteed a win.

"We have won it in the past, but I was still very excited," Siebert said. "It does not belong to me or Andy. The whole crew, staff and faculty really helped out a lot."

Telecommunications instructor Jim Shasky and his faculty and student crew received six nominations this year for the documentary entitled "Squeakers."

The documentary was Ball State's first attempt at using digital equipment to create a film. The equipment was purchased through iCommunication, which was funded by a $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.

Other nominations include:

-Terry Marsh, freshman from Mooreland, film direction and writer for "Lollipop," broadcast by WCRH NewsCenter 43.

-Arne Ahrens, graduate student from Hamburg, Germany, and Kertin Krieg, graduate student from Aechen, Germany, feature/entertainment segment for "Wonderland," broadcast on "Connections Live."

-Jaron Henrie-McCrea, sophomore from Indianapolis, feature/entertainment segment for "Strumpet," broadcast on "Connections Live" and entertainment segment producer for "Welcome to JASH," broadcast on "Connections Live."
