I can't believe Fahad Alqurashi's April 1 column. "The American invasion of Iraq is a huge mistake ... " Is this what journalism has come to?
What future did Iraq have before the war? What was his idea to stabilize the region? Should we leave Iraq alone?
Everybody agrees Saddam is a "bad man," but no one can tell us what to do with him. Saddam is contributing to instability. Freedom breeds stability. Killing innocents for dissenting is not the American way -- it is the Iraqi government's way.
Using women and children as human shields is not the American way -- it is the Iraqi government's way. Alqurashi argues that American military campaigns are not necessary to destroy WMDs. Should we let Saddam have another 12 years to lie and gas his own people?
Everyone who thinks like this is upset about Iraqi innocents dying, but where was this outrage when the thugs of the Iraqi regime were killing innocents before the war?
If war protesters cared about innocents, they would be standing in the front lines with our troops. Our military campaign has accidentally killed how many Iraqi civilians? How many has Saddam killed knowingly and with delight?
When our troops accidentally kill, we feel sorrow; when the Iraqi government does it, it slaughters in public places to make examples of dissenters.
Yes, we do have WMD, but do we use them on citizens who disagree with our government? That would be a tragedy, but luckily for protesters, our government does not.
And Afghanistan? "The Taliban is gone, al-Qaida is gone." Thank God they are. Is he really arguing that freedom -- and not executions for talking, reading and going to school -- is a bad thing? His opinions imply that Afghanistan was better with the Taliban and that Saddam is better leading Iraq than having the United States install freedom.
The view that America won't let Iraqis vote for new leadership is sustained from what, the last year in Afghanistan? This past year shows everything that is to be Afghanistan's future, right? How many Afghan innocents died in the last five years?
He attempts to state that we are "destroying the whole country." Targeting areas of Iraqi military positions is hardly destroying a whole country. We could drop a bomb that would kill all the soulless ghouls who have oppressed Iraq, along with the innocents -- but did we?
We have saved more lives in Iraq in the last two weeks than Saddam has in 20 years. Saddam has destroyed more of his country than we ever could.
This war has fueled anti-American sentiment? There will always be that feeling as long as Middle-Easterners are oppressed by crazed dictators bleeding their own people to death while living in multi-million dollar palaces, all the while blaming us for their citizens' misfortunes.
Hitler took power because Germany had become a country drained of an economy. Lack of capital stirs a lack of motivation to live a life of purpose, so hatred breeds.
These people who are torn to nothing are in the same situation -- so they have no reason to live, only to hate us. It is not our doing; how could it be?
Our intervention will allow Iraqis to live in a capital-driven society where a healthy means to live will give them something to care about.
