The women's tennis team (7-8, 1-3) is on the road for a Friday match against Miami. Saturday sees the Cardinals at Marshall, the defending Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions.
The Cardinals will see limited action from sophomore Leisa Brooks, who is suffering from stress fractures. Head coach Kathy Bull said Brooks is available for doubles but will not play in any singles matches. Bull said Brooks' practice this week was purely stationary work.
Miami (7-8, 2-1) comes into Friday's match with Ball State with an inexperienced team that plays one senior in its starting lineup.
"We are looking at a different Miami squad than we've seen in the past, so there is vulnerability there in the lineup," she said. "This is a match that we've set our sights on for a year or so. Whenever we play Miami, it's a barnburner of a match. The two teams really go after each other. But there are some spots in Miami that we can really take advantage of."
Marshall enters Saturday's match against Ball State at 8-7 overall and 3-0 in MAC competition. Six of the seven Thundering Herd losses have been against ranked teams. Bull said Marshall's No. 1 singles player is one of the best in the league.
Bull said the team had several good days of outdoor practice this week trying to correct some of the inconsistencies that she has seen in several of the last matches.
"We did drills over and over again," she said. "(Wednesday) we started to put those into play, so we really played a lot of singles and doubles, so we can make an improvement from those mistakes from the past weekend. (Thursday) will be relatively light, so we can be fresh before we go to Friday's match."
The Ball State singles lineup will be No.1 junior Melissa Roach (10-4), No. 2 sophomore Jenny Batty (7-7), No. 3 sophomore Jill Wieman (8-7), No. 4 junior Susan Kelley (6-9), No. 5 sophomore Kara Sullivan (3-6) and No. 6 senior Alyce Zollman (3-6).
