Women's play cut short by rain

The women's golf team tied for 12th out of 22 teams at the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., over the weekend.

The Cardinals were tied for 12th after the first round Saturday and finished in the same position after Sunday's final round was canceled due to rain.

The 12th-place finish came as the Cardinals competed in an extremely tough field. The Cardinals' round on Saturday left them with an overall team score of 323. Longwood won the tournament, shooting 307.

Coach Shelley Sanders said she was very pleased to have two players finish in the top 30.

"It was a good course, and I was very pleased with the play of Lisa Robertson and Sarah Padgett," Sanders said.

Robertson led the team with a score of 78, which tied her for 22nd as an individual. Padgett was close behind with a round of 80. According to Sanders, Padgett played even better than her score indicated.

Sanders did say she was disappointed that the team didn't get to play the second round.

"I think we really had an opportunity to move up, with all of the scores being so close," Sanders said, "but we will get to go back, and I am looking forward to playing again next year."
