On a bitter, cold day that showed signs of snow flurries, the men's track team took control of the Ball State Relays without letting the weather affect them.
The Cardinals took first in 11 events, giving them more first-place finishes than their opponents, Miami of Ohio and Tri-State, combined.
Senior Scott Allen finished first for the Cardinals in both the 200- and 400-meter dash.
Sophomore Patrick Bush was able to finish second behind Allen in both those events. Bush was 0.09 seconds and 0.54 seconds behind Allen in the 200 and 400, respectively.
Ball State also saw an excellent performance by senior Victor Johnson. In a close event, Johnson took second in the 100-meter dash, behind Miami's Michael Watts by 0.01 seconds.
Johnson was able to take first in both the long jump and triple jump, out-jumping teammate Jason Howard by nearly half of a meter in the long jump. Also scoring in that event was sophomore Ben Daniel, with a third place jump of 6.53 meters.
Daniel came out huge for the Cardinals as well, with a first-place finish in the high jump at 1.98 meters.
"Victor Johnson and Scott Allen were both double winners," Sprecher said, "and Ben Daniel took first in the high jump, so those same guys we depended on indoors stepped up in the first outdoor meet and led our program."
Ball State was able to take first, second and third in three different events including the 400-meter dash, long jump and javelin throw. Allen, Bush and freshman Jameson Barber were 1, 2 and 3, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Tom Green, Matt Conly and Andrew Miller took top three honors as well in the javelin throw, a new event for the outdoor season that is not offered in the indoor season.
