Students present 'Vagina Monologues'

Proceeds go to local domestic violence shelter

"The Vagina Monologues" will be presented on April 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Ball Room in the Student Center.-á Admission is $5 and proceeds go to A Better Way, Muncie's Domestic Violence Shelter. The performances are sponsored by the Women's Studies Program of Ball State University, Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Feminists for Action.

Stemming from an Off-Broadway show, "The Vagina Monologues" instantly became a hit and has been performed in more than 40 countries and translated into more than 35 different languages.-á"The Vagina Monologues" was written by Eve Ensler, who was the original star of the show. The show is based on more than 200 interviews that Ensler conducted with a diverse group of women from all parts of the world.

The purpose of "The Vagina Monologues" is to stop violence against women and girls. Based on the success of the show, V-Day was started in 1998. V-Day is a non-profit organization that funds companies to stop violence against women and girls and helps those who have been victims.

During the show, audience members will hear the word "vagina" 136 times. There are 16 moans per performance, and almost 2 million people have screamed "cunt" at theaters across America. There is no "male-bashing" during the show, and men are encouraged to attend. Ball State is one of more than 900 college campuses to be fortunate enough to present "The Vagina Monologues" to its students.
