Softball team wins both ends of doubleheader

BSU wins consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month

After only winning two of its previous 10 games, the Ball State softball team put together its first string of back-to-back victories in nearly a month with a sweep of IPFW on the road Monday.

Junior left fielder Kris Burdine's double to center field in the first at-bat of the game got the Cardinals off to a good start. She was driven in by a Ruth Hjelmeland single, which gave BSU an early 1-0 lead.

Ball State went on to win the opener 4-2, thanks to two solid performances by seniors Ruth Hjelmeland (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Britni Clark (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run).

Freshman Quincy Duran pitched well to pick up the win on the hill and pick up her team-leading seventh win of the season.

Senior starting pitcher Cortney Winger had some problems in the first inning of game two as the Mastodons compiled four hits and took advantage of an error to jump out to a three-run lead.

Nevertheless, she got back in a groove the next time out, sitting down three straight batters. Winger ended up finishing with six strikeouts on the day.

The two teams were deadlocked at three heading into the sixth. But, Kerrie Campbell stepped up when the Cards needed help by hitting a clutch single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to lead her team to a 5-3 comeback victory over the Mastodons. The game was called at the end of six innings due to darkness.

Katie Shea boosted the team's efforts with six defensive assists on the day from the shortstop position.

Ball State improved its overall season record to 12-20-1 with the wins.
