Men's track wins Miami Invite

Panning qualifies for NCAA Regionals while winning pole vault

Beating out eight teams, the men's track and field team took first place at the Miami Invitational above Mid-American Conference foe Miami by only three points.

The closest competitor following Miami in third was Louisville, almost 130 points away from Miami.

The Cardinals took first place in six events, including an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 16 feet, 4 3?4 inches in the pole vault by junior Paul Panning.

With his vault, Panning now receives a bid to the NCAA Regionals to take place May 30-31, nearly two weeks after the MAC Championships.

An important contributor at the Miami Invitational was senior Scott Allen, who took second place in the 200 meters as well as first in the 400. Allen was also the anchor of the 4x100 meter crew that won.

Allen was followed in the 200 by teammates Angel Santiago and Patrick Bush, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore Kyle Cleaver was first in the hammer throw with a throw of 173-5. Cleaver's throw was nearly 6 feet and 10 inches longer than the second-place finisher. Cleaver also finished fourth in the discus.

Another strong point for the Cardinals was the javelin throw with first, second and fourth place finishes in the event. Taking first was sophomore Tom Green with a throw of 192-8. Behind him in the javelin were Andrew Miller and Matt Conly.

The triple jump was also an impact event, with the Cards' Victor Johnson and Jason Howard taking first and second in that event, respectively. Johnson was also a second place finisher in the long jump.

The Cardinals will continue their 2003 outdoor season this Saturday when they travel to Terre Haute for the Pace Setter Invitational.

The meet will be hosted by MAC rival Indiana State and will mark the fourth meet of the outdoor season.
