Men finish 9th in Kentucky

The men's golf team tied for ninth place out of 15 teams at the Johnny Owens Invitational this past weekend. The Cardinals tallied a team score of 932 in the tournament played in Lexington, Ky.

Vanderbilt won the event with a score of 903.-áBall State was second among Mid-American Conference teams, finishing behind Miami (Ohio), which placed seventh.-á

Freshman Patrick Wilkes-Krier was the highest-finishing Cardinal, with a sixth place finish and scores of 76-73-76.-áKenny Cook was second on the team, finishing tied for 28th place with scores of 75-74-84.-á

Head coach Mike Fleck said he was extremely impressed with Wilkes-Krier's performance in the difficult and demanding weather conditions in Kentucky.-á

"He finished five shots out of first place and beat the No. 1 player in the country, Brandt Snedeker of Vanderbilt," Fleck said.

Fleck said that the team's mental approach was once again a major problem this weekend.-á

"Our mediocre experience this weekend reflects on our problems mentally," Fleck said.

The team threw away a lot of strokes because the players couldn't keep their heads in the game, Fleck added.

The team travels to the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va., this Wednesday to compete in the Marshall Invitational.
