Cards juggling singles lineup

Richards hoping team can pick up its level of play

Ball State (No. 62) faces No. 48 Louisville (16-4) Wednesday.

Louisville is the first ranked team the Cardinals (12-5) have played since No. 63 Indiana State entered Muncie on March 22. The last time the team beat a ranked team was against Purdue in late February.

Head coach Bill Richards said the team will have to be sharper going into the match with Louisville.

"We're obviously going to have to pick our level up and play better than we did against Indiana State and better than we did this past weekend to have a shot at beating them," he said.

Richards said the top three spots in his singles rotation are secure with senior Chris Varga, freshman Matt Baccarani, and senior Kevin Burnett. The three have combined for a record of 31-18 in singles play.

Richards said the bottom three spots of the singles lineup will continue to rotate in an attempt to find consistency. He said he will take a match by match approach to filling the four, five and six singles spots. Five different players have started in these places in the rotation during the course of the season.

Senior Chris Varga leads the team with the best record in singles play at 12-4.
