Cards fend off Musketeers, 5-3

Strong pitching and two home runs lead to Ball State win

A pair of home runs and a strong pitching effort paved the way for the baseball team's 5-3 win at Xavier in Cincinnati, Wednesday.

Freshman starter Joe Ness (3-1) pitched five shutout innings for Ball State (19-8), and did not allow a hit until the fifth. Four relievers followed, with junior John Pettibone pitching a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, a figure that leads the Mid-American Conference.

Senior Adam Metzler led off the second with a home run to left-center for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals had several chances to raise the advantage, but left eight runners on base in the first five innings. In all they stranded 12.

Junior Jason Bucholtz broke the barrier in the sixth, bouncing a fly ball off the top of the left field wall for a three-run homer. Dygert had doubled and Matt Singleton had bunted his way on base.

The Musketeers (11-15-2) drew within 4-3 thanks to Ryan Schreen's solo homer in the sixth and two unearned runs in the eighth. However, BSU got one back in the ninth. Junior Brad Snyder singled, moved to second on a balk, took third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch.

Dygert continued his strong freshman campaign by going 4 of 4 at the plate. Mike Sullivan, Snyder, Metzler and Kiel Holman all cracked two hits as the Cards racked up 15 total.
