Officially, football season is several months away, but that didn't stop the baseball teams of Ball State and Anderson from producing a football-like score in Tuesday's game.
The Cardinals slugged seven home runs among their 28 hits and scored in every inning as they routed the Division III Ravens, 30-12.
The 28 hits is a school and Ball Diamond record for a game, while the 30 runs is one short of the school record. Last year, Ball State beat the Ravens 16-6.
"We talked after Sunday (a doubleheader split with Miami) that it was important to get out and play after a loss," head coach Greg Beals said. "We have some we need to get better at, but our guys came out with a great approach today.
"It brings the guys back to an even keel. Some of them had tough weekends."
Anderson (16-7) scored three runs in the first, but the Cards quickly countered with five in the bottom half. The Ravens tied it in the second, and BSU scored seven times to take the lead for good. The six-run sixth was its second highest-scoring inning.
Starters Brad Snyder and Lucas Fry hit home runs, with Fry's bouncing off the top of the scoreboard. Kiel Holman and James Nowicki popped off the bench to hit two apiece, and Kevin Sliwa bashed his first career homer.
Brent Przybylski and Troy Garrett (two doubles) notched their first hits of the season.
Beals admitted that Anderson was overmatched some, but said his team "played exceptionally well."
"We had a total performance," he said. "We had guys come off the bench, have an opportunity and take advantage."
Brad Miller recorded four hits, with four others getting three each. Kyle Dygert, Snyder and Marc Franz all scored four runs, while Fry batted in five and Nowicki four.
With the win, Ball State improves to a Mid-American Conference-best 22-10. The Cardinals travel to Victory Field in Indianapolis for non-league matchup with Butler...2*-í'"?*baseball 4.16.03DNEditorial..2SORTB+â-ä2AUDT
