Tennis teams battle MAC rivals

Men's team begins conference play Friday at Buffalo

The No. 57 Ball State tennis team will be on the road Friday and Sunday to open its Mid-American Conference schedule.

Ball State is looking to rebound from last Saturday's 6-1 loss to No. 55 Indiana State, which head coach Bill Richards called the team's poorest performance of the year.

Richards said both teams would give the Cardinals a challenge, and he said Buffalo has improved steadily throughout the several years it has been in the conference.

Richards said the two matches would allow the Cardinals to get into a better winning mind set.

"It's not just about winning and losing," he said. "It's about the level of play. I felt we kind of lost our edge a little bit over the past three weeks. Some of the reason for that was out of our control and some of them were in our control."

The whole focus of this week of practice, Richards said, would be around finding the sharpness the team possessed earlier in the season.

"We hit it hard yesterday and today," Richards said. "I pushed them really hard and forced them to compete and go out there and lay it on the line. I saw this week as a week where they need to be challenged and the matches coming up hopefully will reflect a good week of practice."

Richards said Thursday would be a light practice day because the team will travel out of Muncie.
