Senior Andy Beckman flew to Los Angeles for spring break and was greeted with a surprise from his friends. They were taking him to an audition for a guest host on ABC's morning talk show "Live with Regis and Kelly," part of the show's American Co-Host Search. The show is searching for guest hosts to replace Kelly Ripa while she on maternity leave, Beckman said. The show pooled from Chicago, Orlando, New York and Los Angeles, Beckman said.
The three waited in long lines under the blazing California sun for five hours until they each tried out. "I told the judges that I thought by the time I would get inside I would have been peeling l r e a d y , " Beckman said. Beckman said the audition was very informal. In one part, production staff asked him to tell a story in 60 seconds.
Beckman chose to tell about an experience at the airport luggage-check. "I had to tell a story and sell myself," he said. "It wasn't much to be nervous about." He was also asked to imitate Michael Jackson.
"I didn't think of it as that big of a deal," Beckman said. He left an impression on judges, as he was notified Wednesday afternoon that he was one of 10 finalists. The show will air Beckman's audition on today's episode. Online polls at www.livewithregisandkelly. com will open around 9:30 or 10 a.m., Beckman said.
Viewers can vote for their favorite candidate until 6 a.m. Friday. Five candidates will be chosen based on viewer votes, Beckman said. The five will then fly out to California to audition again with Regis Philbin. One final candidate will be chosen to co-host the show in New York City.
with Philbin on or about April 16, according to the Web site. The chosen guest host "will also get at least $10,000 to work exclusively with Buena Vista Television for six months on the development of possible television projects, followed by an arrangement for a one-year contract with television agency NS Bienstock," according to the Web site.
