Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith rock Terre Haute on 'Unleashed Tour'.

Nationally renowned country recording artists Rascal Flatts and Toby Keith left only a few vacant seats at the Hulman Center last Thursday. They were welcomed to Terre Haute by hundreds of country music fans.

As the arena lights dimmed, cheers rose from eager fans awaiting the appearance of platinum selling vocal group Rascal Flatts.

The Rascals kicked off their eight-song show with "Too Good Is True." The trio includes Gary LeVox (lead singer), Jay DeMarcus (bass guitar) and Joe Don Rooney (lead guitar).

They moved into "Love You Out Loud," the new single off their latest album "Melt." In just five weeks after releasing the album, it achieved platinum status.

The Lyric Street Recording trio provided an intimate performance, capturing the audience members. LeVox strutted across the stage waving to individuals, blowing kisses and even walked among the crowd.

The concert showcased several selections off their self-titled platinum debut album including hits like "While You Loved Me" and "I'm Movin' On." That album produced four top 10 singles for the Rascals.

The last song for the night was the first release off their self-titled album "Prayin For Daylight." They ended the shows in the center of the stage with a bow.

Toby Keith will join Pamela Anderson to host the CMT Flameworthy 2003 Video Music Awards on April 7 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. E.T. on CMT.

Rascal Flatts have appeared in Indiana several times. They drew record-breaking crowds at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for their August 16 show. That beat the previous 1999 record set by the Dixie Chicks.

The main act for the evening was DreamWorks recording artist Toby Keith. This was his first performance at the Hulman Center.

Moments before the show, a black curtain was lifted revealing an industrial themed stage equipped with three jumbo video screens and pyrotechnics. Chants of Toby, Toby began to fill the air.

A brief introduction video featuring Keith as a bulldog was shown. Throughout the different song selections the screens showed fans, shots of Toby and clips from his music videos.

The performance featured some of his hits spanning over nine albums. "Who's Your Daddy," and "Getcha Some" were a couple of these selections. In addition to the new releases, he performed some older hits including "Country Comes to Town," and "Should've Been a Cowboy." He traded lyrics with the crowd - mostly comprised of college students.

He moved into his new single, "Rock You Baby," off his latest album "Unleashed." Toby collaborated on this song with fellow band member Scotty Emerick. Emerick also performed bus songs on the internationally known Bob and Tom Show with Keith.

Emerick and Keith combined to share two bus songs with the crowd "The Taliban Song" and "Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again." He explained the reasoning behind the second song as his experiences recording with country great Willie Nelson on "Beer For My Horses."

Mid-way through the concert Rascal Flatts joined Keith for another upbeat selection. Rascals played tambourines and offered dance steps to the beat.

Keith discussed the criticism surrounding his patriotic song. It offers his take on the September 11 attacks and was written for his dad who fought in Vietnam and lost vision in his right eye. He said his dad never complained about his disability instead he hung a flag out in their yard and taught them about freedom.

While singing "Courtesy of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" the screens faded into compelling pictures of American flags and soldiers. Video clips of Keith on the USO tour last year were also shown.

The song ended with fireworks illuminating the arena and patriotic confetti falling onto the crowd while Keith disappeared behind a cloud of smoke.

The enthusiastic crowd continued cheering long after the show was over demanding him to provide an encore. He obliged. The performance in Terre Haute was one stop in the 130 scheduled stops in the "Unleashed Tour."
