Golf teams play in Invitationals

Men led by MAC Golfer of the Week Kenny Cook

The Ball State men's golf team will compete in the Johnny Owens Invitational at the University of Kentucky Big Blue Course in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday.-á

The Cardinals will be led by senior Kenny Cook, who was named Mid-American Conference golfer of the week for finishing fourth at the El Diablo Intercollegiate last weekend. He is joined by senior Brian Lassiter, junior Geoff Harrian, and freshmen Brandon Boomsma and Patrick Wilkes-Krier.

Among the other teams playing Saturday will be Indiana, Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, Miami, Notre Dame, Michigan and Vanderbilt.

Head coach Mike Fleck wants to increase consistency as well as build momentum and performance in Kentucky. "Consistency, in terms of scoring, is the most important thing," he said.

Fleck believes that this year's team has improved its mental approach to the game.

"They are playing within themselves instead of trying to do too much, which should help them in Kentucky," he said.

The team has been able to play outside the past two weeks with the improved weather. The players have been working on their short games and swing consistency, and hope the improvement will lead to a good outing in Kentucky.-á
