Fire strikes Woodworth Complex

Two students stranded in elevator, treated for smoke inhalation.

Two students were trapped in an elevator filled with smoke Monday night in the Woodworth Complex.

Freshmen Perrianne Hopper and Sarah Conquest were riding the elevator in Brady/Wood Hall when its motor overheated and caught fire, said Jim Clevenger, Muncie Fire Department Battalion Chief.

Thick smoke threatened the students' safety even though there were no flames in the elevator itself, Clevenger said.

Rescue workers pulled the students out through the top of the elevator, Clevenger said.

He said an electrical problem was the cause of the overheated motor.

The motor was located in the mechanical room that sits next to the elevator on the ground floor, Clevenger said. The amount of smoke would have been less if the proximity of the room to the elevator was farther.

Conquest and Hopper were treated for smoke inhalation at Ball Memorial Hospital. They were unavailable for comment at presstime.
