Students arrested during drug raid

Police call seizure one of the largest involving students.

The Delaware County SWAT team confiscated more than $50,000 worth of cocaine and marijuana and arrested three Ball State students, including a Ball State volleyball player, during a raid Saturday night at 720 W. Centennial Ave.

Kenny A. Cook, who is an outside attacker for the men's volleyball team, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and cocaine and maintaining a common nuisance. His roommate, Johnny Lee Taylor, was arrested on charges of dealing in cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana.

Both men lived in an apartment at 720 W. Centennial Ave.

Jemanda D. Harmon, 1651 Madison Ave., was arrested on charges of dealing marijuana and visiting a common nuisance.

"(Harmon) was at the apartment at the time of the arrest and agents have also purchased marijuana from him," said Jess Neal, city-county drug task force investigator.

Taylor was the target of the investigation, Neal said.

"(Cook) was never the target; it was always (Taylor)," Neal said. "(Cook's) arrest was due to the large amounts in the apartment in part and due to where it was," Neal said.

Volleyball coach Joel Walton would not comment on the arrest of his player.

This was one of the largest seizures of controlled substances held by students, Neal said. A controlled substance is a drug or chemical substance whose possession and use are regulated under the Controlled Substances Act.

"In prior investigations, it's typically LSD or other controlled substances," Neal said. "We haven't found this amount of cocaine before."

The drugs were found in common areas of the house, such as in the refrigerator and on tables, Neal said.

The arrests and seizure came after a long-term investigation in which agents had purchased cocaine from Taylor, Neal said.

Neal would not comment on how Taylor came into possession of the cocaine and marijuana or how long he has been selling it because of an ongoing investigation.

As of Monday night, Harmon and Cook had been released from jail on bonds of $40,000 and $10,000, respectively. Taylor was still being held under a $70,000 bond. Harmon and Cook could not be reached for comment.
