Men earn 4 first-place finishes at invitational

Cards took 2 of 3 top spots in the long jump.

FIRST PLACES
The Ball State men’s track team posted four first-place finishes at the Hoosier Hills Invitational:
Paul Panning
Pole Vault
Scott Allen
200-meter dash
Scott Allen
60-meter dash
Steve Schilling
800-meter dash

Junior pole vaulter Paul Panning took first place in his event with a clearance of 16-2 34. Also taking first place was senior Scott Allen in the 200-meter. Allen also placed third in the 60-meter dash.

Head coach Jim Sprecher was pleased with his team's performance and is optimistic about the team's attitude heading into next week's Mid-American Conference Championships.

"The meet served its purpose," Sprecher said. "We went in there and had some good performances and kept the momentum going for the conference championship."

The Cardinals took two of the top three spots in the long jump with a second by senior Victor Johnson (22-6 1/2) and a third by sophomore Jason Howard (21-11 3/4).

Other first-place finishes by BSU included top spots in the 800-meter and high jump. Sophomore Steve Schilling won the 800-meter with a time of 1:54.18.

Ball State will return to action this Friday when the team participates in the indoor season-ending meet, the MAC Championships. The MAC Championships will be held in Kent, Ohio, and will be hosted by Kent State University.
