Cardinals upset No. 48 Purdue

Men's tennis improves to 7-2 with weekend sweep.

The men's tennis team validated its No. 74 ranking this weekend with two wins against Big Ten Conference teams. Saturday Ball State scored a 4-3 upset over the No. 48 Purdue Boilermakers. On Sunday the Cardinals (7-2) beat Wisconsin (3-5) 5-2.

Head coach Bill Richards said Purdue represented the highest-ranked team Ball State has defeated in the past two years. He also said the team is still in the process of getting better with each match it plays.

"You take it one step at a time, and I think we took another step this weekend," Richards said. "The next step has to come against Indiana and Northwestern, who are teams that are better and their rankings are much higher."

Richards said he was happy with the way his team rallied against Wisconsin, coming off the emotional victory over the nationally ranked Boilermakers.

"We knew that they played good doubles," he said. "Win or lose that doubles point - you just have to put it behind you and move on and I thought we did a great job with that today. We came back, and no one got discouraged after doubles, and we won five out of those six singles matches."

Saturday against Purdue the Cardinals won all three of the doubles matches. In singles, Chris Varga, Matt Baccarani and Matt Laramore won. Sunday against the Badgers the team lost two out of three doubles matches but won five out of six in singles. Varga and Baccarani were both victorious again in singles. Kevin Burnett, Klint Knable and Patrick Thompson chipped in wins as well.
