In its closest match of the season, the Ball State (191.425) gymnastics team fell to Illinois State (191.725) and Illinois-Chicago (191.675) Friday night in Irving Gymnasium. It was the fourth meet in a row that the Cardinals failed to pick up a victory.
Friday's meet also marked senior night for the Cards. Seniors Kim Cromer and Amy Bodus were honored before competing in their final home collegiate meet.
"The four years have gone by really fast," said Bodus. "It doesn't seem like that was senior night. It hasn't sunk in."
The two seniors closed out their Irving Gymnasium career in notable fashion. Cromer scored a 9.825 on the vault and the floor. Her score was good enough for her to finish second overall on the floor exercise. Bodus finished right behind Cromer, tying her for third on the floor with a score of 9.80.
The Cardinals finished only .25 points behind second place, and only .3 to first place. Though it was a close loss, the Cards came away from the meet satisfied with the steady improvement they've had in improving as a team.
"We're putting new skills in our routines. You can't be disappointed when you're upgrading your routines," said Bodus.
The new skills the team has been working on paid off in some areas. Senior Jenny Taylor finished first in the balance beam competition with a 9.675. With a 9.80, Sophomore Jessica Surridge managed to tie for first on the uneven bars. Teammate Cassie Anthony tied for third with a personal-best 9.75.
Rounding out Friday's meet for the Cards was Quiana Williams. The junior finished fourth in the all-around with a 37.60. Williams took first place in the floor exercise with a personal best of 9.90. She also tied for fourth in the vault with a 9.75.
The Cardinals traveled to Bowling Green Sunday for a Mid-American Conference meet with the Falcons (results were not available at press time). Saturday, Ball State will travel to East Lansing for a meet with Michigan State and Central Michigan. It will be the second of four consecutive road meets before the MAC Championship.
