With outside funding to the university having quadrupled over the past three years, Ball State has named a new vice president for research to encourage financial growth. The university has also filled the two associate provost positions.
Mary Balogh and B. Thomas Lowe were named associate provosts and James Pyle was named vice president for research.
Pyle's new job will require him to focus on finding outside funding for the university. He was a senior administrator in the Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs at Ball State.
"There's a change in which we're getting our outside support," Pyle said. "There's an increasing importance on outside grant funding."
Four years ago, the university received $5.5 million in outside funding. Last year, that increased to $20 million.
Though it has only been a month, funding this year will be much greater than last year, Pyle said.
Previously, 21 percent of funding came from the federal government, 26 percent from the state government and 49 percent from businesses and foundations.
Pyle will work with a staff to find new sources of money.
"My job is to help faculty find money," Pyle said.
His staff puts out a newsletter that includes information for faculty, such as federal regulations and writing a budget.
"This means we've got resources to help our faculty do great jobs," Pyle said.
He has helped get funding for the $20 million iCommunication project and the $1. 5 million nanoscience research center. He is currently working with the National Baseball Hall of Fame for learning modules.
Lowe has previously held the position of assistant provost. He will be in charge of undergraduate education.
"My job is to be involved in activities on committees and promote faculty interests," Lowe said.
Lowe will be in charge of the Honors College, Center for Energy Research, Office of Teaching and Learning, and the Learning Center, among other programs.
"I'll have more responsibility," Lowe said. "Before, I didn't have the Honors College or CERES reporting to me."
"I'm still trying to sort out all the details but I'll look forward to the challenge and helping the university move forward," Lowe said.
Balogh could not be reached for comment. Before becoming an associate provost, Balogh was an acting assistant provost and dean of the graduate school. She will continue to be dean of the graduate school.
