Blazers sweep baseball team

Cards drop trio of three-run games to begin season.

The opening weekend was not a kind one for the Ball State baseball team, as the Cardinals dropped all three games at undefeated Alabama-Birmingham.

The Blazers (8-0), a Conference USA school, won by scores of 9-6, 5-2 and 8-5. Because of rain, the first game was moved to what became a Saturday doubleheader.

Ball State led the first contest 4-1, and Brad Miller's home run forged a 6-6 tie in the top of the eighth, but UAB pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The second game was suspended until Sunday again because of rain. The Cards' runners in scoring position each of the last three innings couldn't get the clutch hit.

Game three saw BSU trailing 6-0 after seven innings before staging a late rally. In all, the Cards left 25 runners on base in the three games.

Brian Lynch started the first game with freshman reliever Joe Ness taking the loss for Ball State. Jason Paul and Mike Johnston started the other games and suffered losses.

Miller, a freshman first baseman, gathered five hits over the weekend, including the home run and two doubles. Shortstop Jason Bucholtz and designated hitter Adam Metzler (two doubles, four RBIs) had four hits each. Left fielder Ben Schroeder, right fielder Brad Snyder, catcher Lucas Fry and second baseman James Nowicki added three apiece.
