Men's Tennis: Richards begins 31st year at helm

With seven letter winners from last year's 13-14 squad returning, the men's tennis team opens its 2003 season Saturday by hosting Bradley and Valparaiso.

"They're competitive teams," 31-year coach Bill Richards said of Bradley and Valparaiso. "They're not some of the higher-ranked teams on our schedule, but it'll give us an opportunity to play all our guys."

Senior Chris Varga is the top returnee for the Cardinals, having compiled a 62-31 career singles record. He will likely play No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Handling the second singles spot will be freshman Matt Baccarani, who is ranked 23rd in the Midwest.

Other returning top players are senior Kevin Burnett, who Richards says will play either third or fourth singles, and sophomores Matt Laramore and Klint Knable. The remaining letter winners are senior Andy Rector, Michael Heule and Brad Rhodes.

The matches will be played at the Muncie YMCA Indoor Tennis Center.
