Fielders score big for women's team

The Women's track and field team followed a strong home performance with a competitive effort at the Purdue Open on Saturday. The women placed in 11 of 17 events in the non-team scoring meet. Of the 11, three were first place finishes and four were second place finishes.

Katie Nowak fought back this week with a victory in the 1600-meter run (5:08.92) after finishing second in the mile last week at home. The consistent 4x400 meter relay team finished first with a time of (3:57.12) beating host Purdue by more than two seconds. Natasha Lothery took second in the 600-meter run with a time of (1:34.52).

One part of the team that stepped up at Purdue was the field events. Janee Langhorne took first place in the shot put with a throw of 13.36 meters. Teammates Kathleen Guffey and Ashley Giles tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 1.77 meters. Also, Sylvia Payne placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.46 meters.

Other strong performances were Jennifer Dennie with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of (26.03). Melissa Smith took third in the pole vault with a jump of 3.05 meters. Amanda Cope placed third in the shot put with a toss of 12.70 meters. The same relay team that took first place in the 4x400-meter relay placed second in the distance medley with a time of (12:32.25).
