Men's basketball adds to roster

New Mexico State transfer to play 2003 season

Wednesday, the men's basketball team made another addition to its roster, but not until the 2003-04 season.

Dennis Trammell, who played at New Mexico State the last two years, has transferred to Ball State University to play basketball. Due to NCAA regulations, Trammell will have to sit out the upcoming 2002-03 season.

Players transferring from one Division I school to another Division I school miss a year due to NCAA regulation, but will have two years of eligibility following his one-year absence.

"Dennis reminds me of Chris Williams and how he had to sit out his first year here," said Tim Buckley, basketball head coach in a press release. "He is a tremendous defender and also has the ability to put up some impressive offensive numbers."

The 6-foot-3-inch guard started five games last year and played in all 32 games with the Aggies. Helping them to a 20-12 record, Trammell averaged five points and two rebounds per game.

Trammell led the team in scoring twice, scored in double figures five times and had a career-high 21 points last year.

"He's a winner who also comes from a successful high school program," Buckley said.

Trammell attended Westinghouse High School in Chicago. During his time at Westinghouse, the team went 100-3 over three seasons, winning three Chicago Public League titles and two city championships.

His senior season, the team was the Class AA state runner-up and USA Today ranked the team No. 9 in its national poll.

Trammell will be the fourth new addition to the Cardinals for the 2003-04 basketball season. This past week high school standout Peyton Stovall of Lafayette Jeff High School orally committed to Ball State along with Julian "Skip" Mills of North Central High School and Darren Yates of Pike High School.

Another junior-college transfer, Aaron Austin of Central Florida Community College, was to come play at Ball State, but failed to meet graduation requirements at CFCC.
